Welcome to the Mecca... Sorta

August 14th came right before my eyes. My level of excitement from 1- 10 was definitely a 50! Move in day and freshmen week would be the start of my college experience. I was excited to see all of the friends in person that I had talked to all summer on facebook and texting.
As usual move in day was unorganized but it was well expected for it to be. I surely didn’t mind. The night of move it I enjoyed the freshmen pep rally that was put together for us to enjoy and welcome us to the Howard University Family.
August14th was also the start of freshmen week. Freshmen week = PARTIES! As the weekend moved to the week, I prepared myself for orientations and finally meeting my advisor.

The mandatory orientations were very inspiring, in some cases. I enjoyed the entrepreneurial orientation influenced me the most. It encouraged me to seek out all of the opportunities that are available for young, black business minded students.
As for meeting the advisors, well that problem is, I never got to meet mine. For me to have met my advisor would mean to sit in the student advisory office day in and day out waiting and hoping to be spoken to. As for calling, it was no different from any other day- I was unable to get to speak to an advisor.
Although I did not receive much help with my advisors, the sophomores, juniors and seniors that were on campus were much help. They got me through the big transitioning week that I was scared to face.

Operation: What happened to my papers?

Coming to Howard University was a dream if mine since I remember. I wanted to be surrounded around students who were just like me, Black and reaching for success. I also got excited about the face that the majority of the staff is of African descent. I just knew Howard was for me.
I received my acceptance folder on March 23, 2010. I ran and jumped on my mothers bed from excitement. I decided soon after I will be attending Howard University in the fall of 2010 for sure. I began the enrollment process a few weeks later in April by sending in my housing and enrollment fee along with my medical papers. After a month of waiting, my account still said my application was incomplete.
I decided to call the administration to see why this was. After calling back to back for over 2 hours, someone, with an attitude might I say, answered. I began talking yet was stopped mid sentence and was put on hold- for over 20 minutes. She resumed without apology for putting me on hold for so long. She continued with all her constant huh, what’s, and tsk’s. She said my account says incomplete due to the fact I didn't turn my medical papers in, even though I knew for sure I did 3 weeks prior to. After getting annoyed, I asked her can I speak to someone else. She transferred to a polite lady in the health center. The woman kindly explained that my papers were most likely misplaced and apologized to my inconveniences.
My problems with the administration were nowhere near rare. Many others were in my same position or even worse. Those who complained placed their complaints on two Facebook pages that were strictly for the class of 2014,
"Howard University Class of 2014" and " Howard University Committed and Accepted C/O 2014."

I am not here to bash Howard Unversity's credibility, HOWEVER to be a top school, all aspects of the school needs to be above subpar.
